My DTH Experience
Second year Modern Languages student, Katie Taylor, tells us about her placement experience with the Digital Transformation Hub
The application
I worked for the university’s Digital Transformations Hub (DTH). Having received an email inviting me to apply, I organised an appointment with the Careers Service to develop my application, which included an essay. After I submitted the application, the DTH reached out to me, and I attended an introduction talk. Before beginning my shifts, I had to complete a film project to showcase my skills and weaknesses.

Starting out
My placement was unpaid, and I worked around two hours a week during term time from November 2024 until March 2025. For the majority of my placement, I was based in the Humanities Building. During the first few weeks, my group welcomed guest speakers and completed tasks as a team. We received most advice and training during this period. We edited content for social media and participated in videos to promote the DTH.
Skills gained
Towards the end of the placement, I was given more freedom in terms of what tasks I completed and how I approached them. I participated in informal discussions about marketing strategies. Upon reflection, I am very grateful for the placement because it gave me access to useful technology and software. For example, I learnt how to use ClipChamp, CapCut and Adobe Premier Pro. I filmed using technology such as Nikon and GoPro cameras, which I hadn’t used previously. As I learned how to reorder clips and edit subtitles and audio, I gained editing skills. I worked with the other team members on shift with me to create a poster promoting a survey aimed at Arts students. We used Word for this. Additionally, I was offered the opportunity to continue my work experience for a month after the official end date of the placement, allowing me to further develop the skills I gained.

Reflection
The environment in the DTH was very flexible and relaxed, allowing me to fit the placement around my studies. In addition, I am grateful for the opportunity to gain employability skills from this placement which will hopefully help me secure more experience and a paid role in the future. Furthermore, the range of tasks I completed helped me explore different areas of the digital marketing sector. The part of the placement I enjoyed the most was editing photos and videos, which has encouraged me to try more modules in film.
